Secretive Catholic group that played a key role in Franco's government after the 1957 cabinet reshuffle. Opus Dei members were highly educated and believed that strong economic growth and rising living standards would protect the influence and popularity of the Spanish Catholic Church. Key technocrats within Franco's cabinet, responsible for implementing radical free-market reforms, were members of Opus Dei.
