One of the worst atrocities committed during the Civil War happened in the Republican-held Basque town of Guernica on 26th April 1937. The Condor Legion of the German Luftwaffe dropped over 60,000 lbs of explosives over Guernica's civilian population, leaving the town completely devastated and killing over 1,600 people.
