After the First World War, the Saar region of Germany was given to the League of Nations to control. This was significant as the Saar region was a major source of Germany’s coal. As part of the Treaty of Versailles which gave the Saar to the League of Nations, it stated that there should be a vote or plebiscite to decide who should rule the Saar in the future.
In 1935, the Saar region voted 90% in favour of returning to Germany. Hitler regarded this as a great success.
