Yemen famine worse than initially thought

Yemen has been tackling a civil war since 2015. The country has been struggling with food security which has led to famine in some areas - however, the scale of the problem has been hugely underestimated.

Concerns are now high that potentially 14 million people are at risk. The UN has stated that the scale far exceeded any projections and that children in the country are most at risk. The situation has increased as a result of trading issues, whereby food products have struggled to reach certain areas. One of the impacts from the war has been that the main bank has placed restrictions on imports of main food products and the Yemeni currency has depreciated which means people are not getting much food for their money as the prices go up. Due to the main issue here being about economic control, the UN are trying to set up cash programmes across the country to ensure those who need food have the ability to buy it.
