Wildfires cause destruction across the globe

The wildfires in Greece which have killed at least 87 people have devastated the country and the international community. These incidents do appear to be coming more frequent and this year alone, wildfires have been seen in places less likely to be at risk, namely the UK and Sweden.

The recent spate of wildfires across the world have occurred as a direct result of very hot temperatures and limited rainfall. This has left many countries at risk due to the dry flammable vegetation. Discarded cigarettes, out of control camp fires, lightning strikes and possible arson are only the trigger for what can become a large scale threat to human life. The speed at which they spread, often associated with strong winds, means that people are often cut off from escape routes and are left trapped. This is exactly what happened in Greece, with many isolated fishing villages surrounded by a wall of fire; with the sea being their only escape route.

In the last 24 hours, thousands have fled from fires starting in California. This is concerning as there are at least 3 months left of the fire season, meaning that fires are now starting earlier and there are potentially worse fires yet to come.
