Why are US lakes becoming saltier? Ecosystems under stress

Here's a useful article shared on Twitter that illustrates human-induced salinisation of fresh-water lakes in the US.

The heavy use of salt to keep roads snow- and ice-free for US freight traffic is having a negative effect on the ecosystems of nearby lakes. As saline water is washed off by rain into river systems and then into freshwater lakes, ecosystems are being thrown out of equilibrium and causing a change in plant and animal species. Very relevant to the A level AQA 'Ecosystems under stress' unit.
