UK flood warnings following Storm Dennis
18th February 2020
More than 200 flood warnings are in place across the country.
Whilst many areas of the UK are at risk the worst affected areas are South Wales, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire. These areas have had major incidents declared and many families have had to be evacuated from their homes. There are significant concerns for the rivers Severn,Trent, Wye and Lugg and with the threat of heavy rain through to the end of the week it is likely the flood warnings will remain and more areas will be threatened.
Many communities are angry over the events and think more should be done to mitigate against the increase in extreme weather which is being linked to the floods.
There were fears that defences built around Upton-upon-Severn after the 2007 floods to withstand a 100-year event could be breached overnight; showing that whilst some areas have protection, enough has not been done and that current defences aren’t strong enough.
