Typhoon Kammuri batters the Philippines
3rd December 2019
The late season typhoon has hit the central Philippines at the southern tip of Luzon Island. This densely populated island has reacted by evacuating 200,000 people from along the coast and in some mountainous regions over fears that the heavy rainfall could lead to floods and landslides- putting lives at risk.
This is the 20th typhoon of the season, which made landfall at just before midnight local time on Tuesday. 35 provinces have had their warning level raised to a category 4 storm. Sea travel was suspended in the north east region of the country and the international airport was closed for 12 hours as the typhoon swung towards Manila.
Whilst damage has been surveyed within the cities, it is not yet known how much damage there is in the rural coastal and mountainous regions.
