TV recommendation: Simon Reeve's South America (Episode 2)

Vicki Woolven

20th September 2022

This is a brilliant episode and a superb way to update your Amazon and Rio case studies!

This is the second episode of Simon's journey through South America, and focuses on Brazil. The episode is split into three parts...

Firstly, he visits the Waiapi people of the Amazon, an extremely remote tribe who are threatened by logging and mining, who are working with scientists to prove how the rainforest can be managed to produce valuable crops and lifesaving medicines without destroying the environment.

Secondly, filming was interrupted by the pandemic, so Simon looks at how Brazil ended up being one of the worse hit countries, visiting neighbours who had very little access to healthcare throughout.

Finally, he ends this episode in Rio, looking at the threat of extreme weather and the technology in place to monitor potential natural hazards, as well as visiting a woman who has planted an urban forest to cool her neighbourhood and grow fresh food for many of the city's neglected children.

An absolutely brilliant watch - one to watch in class or to set for homework - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/...
