The search for energy causes disasters

During a recent year 8 lesson on resources, we had a debate about the balance between extracting natural resources and its environmental impact. Indepth discussions were had regarding why we need to extract versus the pupils whose belief was to protect the natural environment. The famous Exxon Valdez oil spill was used as an example of an oil spill having catastrophic impacts on the environment To then discover that there has been another leak into the environment didn't surprise me, but this time it was methane.
