The Earth's Largest Volcanic Region - Is UNDER the Ice

14th August 2017
A fascinating discovery by a team from Edinburgh University - from research inspired by an undergraduate!
The Guardian reports here how scientists from Edinburgh University have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth – located two kilometres below the surface of the vast ice sheet that covers west Antarctica.
The project has revealed almost 100 volcanoes ranging in height from 100 to 3,850 metres.
What might happen to the Antarctic ice-sheet if these volcanoes erupted? Meltwater outflows into the Antarctic ocean could trigger sea level rises.
