Steel firm Tata in merger

Tata has joined with German industrial firm ThyssenKrupp and this has increased hopes in Port Talbot that jobs that have been at risk may now be stable.
4000 people are employed at the Port Talbot plant and there have been concerns for a while that many would lose their jobs. In September 2017 when discussions over the deal were taking place, both companies stated that it was likely that the plant would close due to cost-cutting measures. Unions now through are hopeful that the merger; which is anticipated to save between £350 and £440 million a year, will enable the plant to continue.
