Sinkholes uncovered

Jim Riley

3rd February 2014

In the news today a sinkhole has swallowed a car in Buckinghamshire. This image would provide a great starter for a lesson on the causes and effects of Sinkholes.

Sinkholes form in chalk or limestone. Over thousands of years rain water dissolves the rock, turning crevices into caves. The overlying material collapses due to extreme rainfall or nearby construction work.

Pupils could watch the Horizon programme on BBC2, Thursday 6th January at 9pm and then research another sinkhole from around the world.
