New Zealand volcano erupts

Joanne Parkinson

9th December 2019

The volcano on White Island - which last erupted in 2001, is one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes and people were seen walking inside the crater just before the eruption.

Authorities have stated that there were around 50 people on the island when the volcano erupted. Whilst most tourists have been rescued - with one critically injured - there are still a number of people who are unaccounted for.

The next few hours will be crucial as rescue services arrive and search for the missing. Locals have been warned about ash fallout too so the eruption has proved to be hazardous.
