Scientists in the USA have managed to cultivate a tobacco crop which could pave the way for improving yield of food crops. In a world with an ever increasing population and the threat of climate change hindering crop growth, this could be a breakthrough in ensuring food demand is met.

The key to this increased productivity is the ability of the scientists to overcome the natural restrictions of photosynthesis which currently limit growth. Toxins produced during the process restrict the plants' ability to maximise growth so the findings of the study are exciting as they show a way of producing more food which can go some way to alleviate the future concerns of global drought and famine.
