London to introduce first all-electric double-decker in bid to reduce air pollution

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that it will be introducing the first fully electric double-decker bus in the capital in October 2015. Whilst there are already 8 single-decker all-electric buses and 1300 hybrid electric/diesel buses in service, it is only recently that battery technology has developed to the point where it can power double-deckers. Built by a Chinese company, it is hoped that the trial will lay the path for further all-electric public transport in the busy capital. Double-deckers are not only a traditional sight on the streets of Britain's cities, in London they help carry more than twice the passenger numbers than the tube underground system. And as London's population continues to grow, the demands for more environmentally-friendly transport solutions become ever more urgent.
