Japanese floods

9th July 2018

The south-western main islands of Kyushu and Shikoku have been given disaster warning status as the death toll has risen to 76 overnight, with 92 people still missing.

The causes of the flooding is rainfall. Japan has seen its highest rainfall levels in decades with some areas receiving 10.4 inches in a 3-hour period. The intense rain, linked to a typhoon system caught many residents out and left hundreds of people stranded in areas and having to go to their roofs to avoid imminent danger. Flash flooding also occurred as river banks burst and landslides swept through neighbourhoods.
