Global CO2 emissions on the rise
12th June 2020
CO2 levels across the world have risen as the lockdowns ease. Government strategies such as encouraging the public to choose private cars over public transport are part of the problem.
Emissions were always going to increase as countries started to go back to normal but the rate at which this has happened is concerning. Emissions fell by a quarter when lockdowns were first announced but recent measures suggest that global CO2 levels are now only 5% lower than at the same time in 2019.
Aims to reduce emissions to reach the levels set by the Paris Protocol are unlikely to happen, based on recent calculations and there is pressure for governments to focus their efforts on investing in high to low carbon infrastructure and investing more in the preservation of nature.
