With Ebola being a major talking point in the news at the moment pupils are fascinated by this issue. Discussions surrounding diseases is a great way to focus on the wider geographical impact.

Bird flu is on the increase once again. The discovery of a strain of bird flu in the Netherlands is a concern as Scientists think there is a chance that it could mutate and be caught from human-human contact. Using articles like this with a class as a starter activity engages their thinking about the long-term and global impacts of an event and what the "bigger picture" is about the issue.
