Fog catching to reduce desertification

The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on the planet, receiving less than 0.1 mm of rainfall a year on average. Yet the town of Pena Blanca is reducing desertification. This is being achieved by using fog catchers, which are large nets with a very fine mesh. As fog clouds formed at the coast move inland the nets capture tiny drops of moisture which drip into a canal below. The water is then ready for use. Around Pena Blanca 100 hectares of land is now covered in the vegetation it once had and a local brewery has also been able to start up
