Flag of the Week - a New and Regular Feature!
18th November 2022
We are launching our new weekly feature - Flag of the Week. This powerpoint will be available to download Sunday evening each week - and will be a great talking point during tutor time, or as part of your lessons.
A couple of years ago Louis Vis (@MrVisGeography) shared his love of flags on Twitter and talked about his vast collection and how each week he pins one on the classroom wall to generate a discussion about current geography in the news.
Back then I was Head of Geography and Sociology at a school in Suffolk and decided to adopt this great idea - each week I would choose a country in the news and produce a powerpoint with the flag, some images to general discussion and links to news articles and short video clips. I would then share this with staff across the school - it was received really positively by teachers and students.
A few days ago one of Louis' lovely flags popped up in my Twitter feed that got me thinking about how it was something we could create and share weekly - therefore giving you a ready-to-go tutor time activity free to download weekly. A quick chat with Louis confirmed that he is happy for us to use and run with his idea!
We are starting off with the protests in Iran - so quite a tough topic to launch with - but a really important one. However, we will try to feature as many positive news stories as we can.
We are also open to suggestions, so if you find anything that you think would be good to include then please contact us through our Twitter account - @tutor2uGeog.
