California is in the grip of a three-year drought that is causing widespread damage in the most populous state in the US.

In this excellent FT video Pilita Clark, the FT's environment correspondent, reports from the California's Central Valley on questions about how water is used there.

California is the most populous state in the US and the inhabitants of the state are well-used to drought conditions. However, there are some significant new challenges to the availability of water - not the least heavily-armed drugs cartels!
