Ebola outbreak in DRC
20th May 2018
There are 25 suspected deaths being investigated in the country, with the WHO stating that this is not yet a public health emergency and it can be controlled.
45 people are suspected to have been infected and the source of this outbreak is believed to be in a rural area. There are however concerns about the spread of the disease as there is 1 confirmed case in the city of Mbandaka. Future issues may occur due to the fact that Mbandaka is a transport hub for the DRC and other neighbouring countries. There is concern that the disease may spread to the capital and to other countries. Spread of the disease to the capital Kinshasa would be extremely difficult to manage.
The disease itself is fairly easy to catch if people come into contact with bodily fluids of an infected person. Early onset of the disease replicates symptom similar to flu so people wouldn't realise the risk until they themselves had caught it.
