Costa Rica only uses renewable energy
23rd March 2015
So far this year Costa Rica has only used renewable energy to meet its energy needs. It is the only country in the world that has managed to achieve this impressive feat. This compares with Britain who last year generated only 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.
Costa Rica has reached this environmental target thanks to heavy rain in the first three months of the year, which has sustained its hydro electric power generators. About four fifths of the country's energy comes from hydroelectricity, up to ten per cent comes from geothermal power generated alongside its numerous volcanoes, and the rest comes from wind, biomass and solar plants.
The Central American country is well known for its green credentials but has been able to achieve this record due to its high rainfall totals and volcanic activity combined with a relatively low population of 4.8 million and low levels of heavy industry
