Climate change affects women more
10th March 2018
When we discuss the impacts of climate change we look at social impacts on people in a general way, yet, there is evidence that women will be impacted by climate change more than men.
In many countries, where women have the "provider" role for their family, their daily lives will be affected by climate change in a variety of ways. Lack of water for farming will reduce yield and will impact on food supply leading to food insecurity. Where previously, farmers may have had surplus crops which they could sell to make money, this is less likely due to climate change and can affect budgeting for the family. Women will have to walk further for water too due to changes in rainfall patterns which will affect their ability to do other jobs or educate themselves.
The concern is so great that it has even been a key focus at the 2015 Paris agreement where strategies were discussed to empower women to tackle these future issues.
