Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
9th September 2018
A Dutch based project plans to send a 600 metre barrage into the Pacific Ocean to clean up surface plastics of 1cm diameter and larger.
The project has its supporters and its critics. Supporters suggest that the project, if successful, could have the capacity to collect up to 90% of surface ocean plastics by 2040. However critics are concerned about the impact that the barrage could have on marine organisms. Creatures such as turtles could get caught up in the skirt that the barrage drags along. The fact that there will still be microscopic plastics in the ocean is also a concern as they will still get into the food chain.
