Universal Credit
A new type of single monthly benefit designed to replace 6 separate benefits for people who are on low income or out of work. It replaces the following benefits:
Income-based JSA
Income-related employment and support allowance
Income Support
Child Tax Credit
Working Tax Credit
Housing Benefit
The stated aim of the Government in introducing Universal Credit is to “reduce poverty, by making work pay, and to help claimants and their families to become more independent” The introduction of universal credit has come under significan tcriticism with many claiming that it has led to a surge in the number of people having to make use of food banks.
