Private Finance Initiative
The PFI is a means of obtaining private funds for public sector projects. PFI is when major infrastructure/buildings/project/large scale contracts are issued by governments to private firms. PFI schemes have existed since the early 1990s and have been used to build and run hospitals, schools and prisons among other things. There are currently about 700 PFI projects in the UK.
