Collective bargaining
Collective bargaining for wages takes place between employers and trade unions (representing workers). Strong trade unions may be able to bargain for higher earnings for their members. In some industries, union membership is a low percentage of employment and workers do not have the same strength of collective bargaining power.
According to the most recent data, collective bargaining is stronger in the UK public sector than in the private sector. In 2017, union membership was 51.8% in the public sector and 13.5% in the private sector.
