Co-operatives

Co-operatives are businesses owned and run by their members. Examples include Arla Foods (a farmers’ co-operative), the Co-Op Group, Richer Sounds, John Lewis / Waitrose and also credit unions.

There are many smaller-scale producer cooperatives in the United Kingdom. Here are a few examples:

  1. The Suma Wholefoods cooperative is a worker-owned cooperative that supplies a range of natural and organic products to retailers, catering companies, and individuals across the UK.
  2. The Equal Exchange cooperative is a worker cooperative that imports and sells fairly-traded coffee, tea, chocolate, and other products from small-scale farmers in the developing world.
  3. The Riverside Market Garden cooperative is a group of small-scale farmers who produce and sell organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers to local customers in the Yorkshire Dales.
  4. The Heart of England Forest cooperative is a group of landowners and supporters who are working to create a new native forest in the West Midlands region of England.
  5. The Community Energy Scotland cooperative is a not-for-profit organization that supports the development of community-owned renewable energy projects in Scotland.
