Barriers to Entry

Factors which make it difficult or expensive for new firms to enter a market to compete profitably with existing suppliers. Examples of barriers to entry include intellectual patent protection; brand loyalty among consumers; the high costs of buying capital equipment and the need to win licences/franchises. When barriers to entry are high, then a market will tend to be less contestable.
