The patterns of trade in goods and services for different countries can reveal much about their stage of development and the capabilities and capacities that have been built up over time. The wonderful work of Cesar Hidalgo and Ricardo Hausmann at the Observatory of Economic Complexity allows us to visualise the product spaces inhabited by a large number of countries. Drawing on the latest available data I use these visualisations when introducing the economics of international trade.
