This short video looks at recent data on the market share of leading businesses in a variety of UK and global industries. In some, there are dominant firms with more than a quarter and perhaps in excess of a third of industry sales. In others, there is more even and often fierce competition between scaled rivals. The extent of monopoly power depends in part on how a market is defined and also by the size and resilience of barriers to entry into the industry in the long run.
