Government spending in the UK refers to the amount of money the government spends on goods and services each year. The biggest elements of state spending in the UK are:
- Healthcare: The National Health Service (NHS) is the largest single expenditure in the UK budget, accounting for around 15% of government spending.
- Social security: This includes pensions, unemployment benefits, and other benefits paid to individuals and families in need, accounting for around 25% of government spending.
- Education: The UK government spends a significant amount on education, including funding for schools and universities.
- Defence: The UK spends a significant amount on its military and defence programmes, which accounts for around 5% of government spending.
