Wolmar makes the case for UK rail nationalisation
11th January 2022
Leading railway author, Christian Wolmar, writes in the Guardian making the case for the re-nationalisation of the railways.
He argues that Covid-level support for the sector can only be temporary and that without it the sector seems to be headed for crisis, in part because of fundamental disagreement about the direction of travel - the re-opening of some lightly used lines, which seems inefficient, and yet great expense in the form of HS2.
Of course, to a large extent the future of rail will be determined by working habits and if these have changed irrevocably, then perhaps the future is as bleak as this article suggests.
