Where does the UK's overseas aid go?

The debate over the scale and substance of the UK's humanitarian support for displaced refugees from the Syrian crisis has focused attention on how the UK spends their annual aid budget. The UK government has committed itself to allocating 0.7% of national income to overseas aid - a policy that I and many others support. But getting the best social benefit from this money remains crucially important.
