What Makes Blood Plasma So Expensive?
11th March 2021
Business Insider highlights the fact that the US supplies two-thirds of the world's plasma - at a cost of $2.7 billion a year.
Each time you donate plasma, you can earn $50 - whereas the product itself sells at $200 per time - although you can earn $6,000 dollars per year as a result.
This fascinating clip looks at why blood plasma costs so much - it's primarily because plasma is 90% water and extracting the protein required means that it requires 100-130 plasma donations to treat a patient for a year.
