UK poised to have our first female Chancellor
22nd June 2024
In a little under two weeks, there will be a change of government and Rachel Reeves will become our first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. The risk averse approach of the Labour Party to fiscal rules and existing government spending and tax plans is perhaps driven the imperative of getting over the finish line. They might become bolder with economic reforms as their first term gets underway, focusing instead on a series of microeconomic changes to stimulate growth. Whether or not this will be sufficient will become apparent over time.
I really enjoyed going back yesterday to one of my former stamping grounds - the RGS in Newcastle - to discuss prospects for the UK economy and to offer some suggestions for student engagement and enrichment as Year 12 head into their summer break and start UCAS preparations in earnest.
