The rise (and rise) of the unconditional university offer

Geoff Riley

30th November 2017

Are colleagues in other schools and colleges seeing more universities offering unconditional places to students who choose them as firm first choice?

I had yet another one today AAA to study Politics at York but unconditional if confirmed as a firm preference.

Does this impact on student motivation (for better or worse!) and also on student/parental pressure applied to teachers / heads of department to raise forecast grades in a bid to win a conditional offer?

Are we getting closer to the stage when the countless hours helping students craft their personal statements and writing references for them for universities will become irrelevant?

The balance of power seems to be shifting towards the students with universities clamouring to offer unconditional places to students with the best GCSE grades.

The steep decline in AS entries may well have accelerated this process.

There is a lively debate on this issue taking place on the Economics and Business Facebook group which is a terrific place for support and encouragement among the teaching community.
