The Mind of the Market

Geoff Riley

8th March 2009

The causes of financial and economic crisis and distress are complex and multi-layered. There will be much written about it in the months and years to come and I suspect many of the best new writing will focus on neurological explanations for the behaviour of agents.

A couple of my students have been reading Michael Shemer’s new book “The Mind of the Market” who comes up with an interesting hypothesis that, just like humans, the market has a collective mind that drives it - just like the human mind the mind of the market has evolved over time as it is a manifestation of a collective will. There is a good piece here.

Shermer appeared on the excellent Authors at Google - and his talk can be found here
