Enrichment
The EU, Free Trade and Protectionism [Year 12 Enrichment Task]
14th May 2020
This week's enrichment task for Year 12 students reflects on Brexit - remember that? For the first couple of months of 2020 it seemed likely to be the most fundamental economic shock for the year, and while it has been all but obliterated from the news headlines, the process still continues.
This task requires students to take the role of an economic adviser in the Department for International Trade, writing a briefing note for a government minister about the economic impact for the UK of the loss of free trade with the European Union. It includes links to government department websites, including that of the Department for Exiting the EU (which closed on 31st January when we left, but still has some very useful links to articles and data) and of the ONS 'Pink Book', an annual publication which summarises the economic transactions of the UK with the rest of the world over time. It also requires students to consider both microeconomic and macroeconomic impacts in a synoptic manner, which serves as an introduction to the synoptic exam papers they will be taking next year.
