ESSENTIAL CPD COURSE: Teaching the New A Level Economics: Mastering Quantitative MethodsExtra course date now available - 12 February 2015 - LondonYou can also book this course directly from our online store or download and send us a completed booking formA key feature of the new A Level and standalone AS specifications (for first teaching from September 2015) is a greater focus on quantitative methods. The Ofqual subject criteria with which awarding bodies must comply states that specifications must require learners to:"...develop analytical and quantitative skills in selecting, interpreting and using appropriate data from a range of sources"

These Quantitative Skills in Economics include the ability of Economics students to

  • Calculate, use and understand ratios and fractions
  • Calculate, use and understand percentages and percentage changes
  • Understand and use the terms mean, median and relevant quantiles
  • Construct and interpret a range of standard graphical forms
  • Calculate and interpret index numbers
  • Calculate cost, revenue and profit (marginal, average, totals)
  • Make calculations to convert from money to real terms
  • Make calculations of elasticity and interpret the result
  • Interpret, apply and analyse information in written, graphical and numerical forms

Quantitative skills not in bold above do not form part of the AS requirement; however, they may still be assessed at AS and must be assessed at A Level.

Importantly, Ofqual go on to require that:

The assessment of quantitative skills represents a minimum of 15% of AS marks and a minimum of 20% of the overall A Level marks. These skills may be assessed across the assessment objectives.

It remains to be seen how the awarding bodies will incorporate the increased focus on quantitative skills into their exam papers. However, it is safe to say that students will need to become much more proficient at these skills.

Accordingly, the tutor2u Economics team have developed a comprehensive collection of new teaching & learning resources for the new A Level Economics which specifically addresses the increased emphasis on quantitative techniques.
