Geoff Riley

13th January 2013

As President Barack Obama prepares for his second inauguration I have put together this set of twenty five charts on the state of play for the US economy. An underlying awareness of some of the major challenges facing the world's largest economy provides great context for students writing on many other issues, for example US-China trade relationships, or connections between the USA and her NAFTA partners or emerging economies in Latin and South America. The charts cover the following areas:

  1. Economic Growth
  2. Growth and Inflation
  3. Monetary Policy Interest Rates
  4. Real GDP and Employment
  5. Duration of unemployment in the US
  6. Payroll Employment
  7. Manufacturing Employment
  8. Government borrowing and debt
  9. US Government Bond Yields
  10. Real per capita incomes
  11. Gini Coefficient for the USA
  12. Share of Income by Quintile
  13. Selected US House Price Indices
  14. New Housing Starts in the USA
  15. Loan Delinquency Rates
  16. US Trade Balance
  17. USA - World Export Share and Potential GDP Growth
  18. USA Current Account Balance with Canada and Mexico
  19. Export share and import penetration
  20. USA Savings Ratio and Current Account Balance (BoP)
  21. USA Current Account – Selected Countries
  22. USA External Debt
  23. Trade Weighted Value of the $
