“Super Saturday” millions

Jim Riley

18th December 2010

This amazing snow may be enough to send so many of us out on our sledges, but how many determined shoppers ‘on the so-called “super Saturday” millions braved snow and freezing temperatures to buy gifts’?

How likely will the weather influence shoppers this weekend? A perfect article from the BBC here to consider the evaluation issues for Business & Economic students.

Great PASIFIC moments ... if you are new to the mnemonic…

Population – most of the population can’t get out!

Advertising – tonnes of Christmas adverts on TV, newspapers, magazines and on-line.

Substitutes – make your own presents (I’m hoping for truffles!) or how many of us have substituted shopping real time with on line shopping? Just have to ‘nervously’ wait for those parcels to be delivered on time…...!

Income – could this be ‘the last’ blow out of the year or are we all saving due to recession/unemployment, uncertainty….

Fashion – winter warmers are a must, but so are maxi-dresses and the traditional LBD.

Indirect tax – VAT rising in Jan!

Complements.... to go with all the ‘must have items’...

So ‘to what extent will the snow have an impact on the Christmas tills?

It depends on the TIME – the snow could melt away in the next few days & Christmas is not until Saturday. How much time do you need to do your Christmas shopping anyway?

It depends on the MAGNITUDE – how much snow has fallen in your area, as well as how much shopping you still have to do!

It depends on the ELASTICITY of demand…. you never know… this could mean loads of bargains in the last few days with all that Christmas stock left on the shelves…

Not sure about you, but there are still a few more shopping days left anyway, and Santa isn’t ever deterred by a bit of snow… he’s from the North Pole isn’t he?
