South Western Railway is Nationalised
4th December 2024
The Labour government are taking train operating companies back into public ownership, having announced that South West Trains are going to be the first operator to be renationalised in May 2025. It's the first step in a plan to see all operators renationalised under the Great British Railways banner, and implies the failure of privatisation in the sector. This is surely indicated by the fact that South West Trains made an operating profit of £12.2m last year only on the back of over £140m worth of subsidy from the Department for Transport.
