ONS reimagines how to measure the economy

Deep inside the offices of the ONS's Data Science Campus in Newport (Gwent) data crunchers are hacking away trying to find new and better ways of measuring the economy.
The FT's Chris Giles reports on collaborative work using data such as Google Street View, shipping data and VAT returns to capture more immediately and perhaps more accurately where the UK economy is within the economic cycle and more importantly, to identify turning points that might affect policy.
