New Zealand scraps generational smoking ban

New Zealand's much trumpeted policy to introduce a generational smoking ban has been overturned by its new government, not on health grounds but to help pay for tax cuts.
In 2022, New Zealand passed legislation to prevent people born on or after January 1, 2009, from legally purchasing cigarettes. But the new government has announced a volte face. Public health officials in New Zealand believe will cost thousands of lives and be “catastrophic” for Māori communities.
