An important part of the CrossRail project has been decided with the news that the £1.4bn contract to run the new Crossrail service through London from 2018 has been awarded to Hong Kong-based MTR Corporation.

The MTR Corporation also operates and manages the London Overground system in the United Kingdom, the Melbourne Train System in Australia and Stockholm Metro in Sweden.

The full opening of CrossRail is scheduled for 2018 but some services will start running from the summer of 2015 leaving from Liverpool Street to Shenfield.

The CrossRail contract lasts for eight years with an option to extend to 10 years and is expected to employ around 1,100 staff with up to 850 new posts created.
