Monopsony in the Supermarket Industry- Exam Questions

David Carpenter

16th December 2012

The other day I asked my year 13 Economists, which topics they wanted to revise before heading off for the Christmas holidays. Monopsony came up as being something they'd found particularly difficult recently, and so I've created some example exam questions to hopefully improve their understanding of this topic.

The case study here is the UK supermarket industry, probably the best example we've got of a monopsony- with a 4-firm concentration ratio of 76%, and around 7,000 firms supplying food products to the industry. I've adapted some information from BBC News and this very interesting study to create the case study material, and have put 3 questions in the style of Edexcel's unit 3 exam structure at the end. If any colleagues would like the markscheme to go with these questions, please DM me on Twitter (@dizzleeducation) or email me. I don't want my students getting hold of this markscheme just yet!

You can download the questions in either pdf or word format.

P.S. Please note that Edexcel Unit 3 exams would also have an 8-mark question, but I couldn't think of anything else to ask about monopsonies so there's only 3 here!
