Market structrures - competition and concentration

Geoff Riley

27th October 2010

I am getting stuck into teaching A2 micro market structrures either side of half term and have been looking for a wider variety of industries to study than ‘the usual suspects’! Here are ten examples of industries and I will be asking students whether they fit (broadly) into one of three categories

Duopoly Oligopoly Competitive markets (low concentration ratio)

Are there better examples that I can add to the list as a prompt for discussion?

Here are ten different markets – which market structure is most applicable?

Household detergent suppliers in the UK
Retail coffee bars in London
High street banks in the UK
Producers of liquefied gas (worldwide)
The restaurant industry in the UK
Aircraft manufacturing (worldwide)
Transatlantic airline services
Local bus services in major UK towns
Pay-TV industry in the UK
Market place for apps for the iPhone & iPad
